Dickinson man injured, oil spills in semi rollover

A Dickinson man was injured when the semi he was using to haul a tank trailer of crude oil rolled over Monday on a Mercer County highway.

According to the North Dakota Highway Patrol, Gary A. Casper, of Dickinson, was driving northbound around 1 p.m. CDT on Highway 49 in a white 2012 Kenworth truck with an attached 2012 Dragon tank trailer loaded with crude oil and owned by Southern Energy Transportation when he attempted to slow down for an enclosed straight truck ahead of him that was making a left-hand turn onto County Road 25.

Casper swerved to the left to avoid a rear-end collision and his vehicle entered the west ditch, crossed County Road 25 and rolled over in the north ditch of County Road 25.

Casper was transported by the Mercer County Ambulance to Sakakawea Medical Center in Hazen with unspecified injuries.

An unknown amount of crude oil spilled out of the top of the trailer as a result of the accident. Beulah and Hazen fire departments dammed up the leaking crude oil to avoid contamination of a nearby stream and pond.

The North Dakota Highway Patrol and the Mercer County Sheriff's Department responded to the accident.
