Dunn County official says county is 'running out of water real quick' for road projects

MANNING -- Dunn County commissioners hope a visit with the State Water Commission will yield a better solution to the county's water needs.

Dunn County Road Superintendent Mike Zimmerman said at Wednesday's commission meeting at the Dunn County Courthouse in Manning that his department "is running out of water real quick" while it works to complete several summer road projects.

"Water from Knife River and the Green River are what we are down to," he said.

The county may have to consider purchasing water, Zimmerman said.

Before that, however, the commissioners agreed to talk to the state again about the need for water in Dunn County.

"Every application they see is for the Killdeer aquifer, but that's not the case with us," Commissioner Daryl Dukart said.

Commissioner Donna Scott, who the commissioners asked to look into setting up a meeting between the commission and officials with the State Water Commission, said many of the wells they are looking at are not in the Killdeer aquifer.

"I think we need to talk to the (State Water Commission), and state our case for the need to develop a well," she said. "The existing wells are not in the aquifer, but they don't supply us with enough water so we can fill up our trucks."

Construction at the Dunn County Airport in Killdeer continues, Phil Askerlund told the commissioners.

Askerlund said 650 feet of the runway at the airport is torn up at the moment.

He said the Airport Authority is looking to put in a culvert, stabilize the trench and get the runway up to grade and compaction work finished.

He added that the members of the airport authority have met with two soil stabilization companies. Askerlund said both companies are aware that the Airport Authority has a limited amount of money to work with, and he said the members will have to decide which company they want to go with.

As long as the work does not cost more than $100,000, the project will not have to be put out for bid.
