Border States celebrates grand opening

Border States Electric celebrated the grand opening of its new Dickinson location on Wednesday.

Border States Electric is expanding.

The Fargo-based company celebrated the grand opening of its 42,000-square-foot facility on Wednesday in Dickinson, which has been fully operational since January.

The new location is more than double the size of the previous Dickinson location, which had been operating since 1979.

"We just outgrew the old building and needed more square footage," said Denis Troftgruben, Dickinson branch manager.

But doubling the space in Dickinson isn't the only expansion the electrical distribution company has been doing, Troftgruben said. The 100 percent employee-owned company recently opened eight locations in Utah. It is the ninth largest electrical distribution company in the United States.

"Business has increased over the last few years and that causes you to need more inventory and more inventory, of course, needs more space," Troftgruben said. "It's all driven by not just oil field but all markets."

Growth in Dickinson due to the oil boom prompted the expansion of the Dickinson location, Troftgruben said. The company serves the industrial, contractor, utility and data sectors of the electrical distribution business. In Dickinson, industrial has been strong.

"They're all very important to us," Troftgruben said.

Border States Electric started in Grand Forks in 1952. In the last 61 years it has expanded into 14 states with 63 locations.

"I think we're just thrilled to be able to grow in the community," spokeswoman Lindsey Presser said. "We've been here a long time and we're happy to have a facility that we can serve the community in the future."

Border States Electric is located at 100 29th St. W. in Dickinson. Call 701-225-4466 or visit for more information.
