The Billings County state's attorney released information Friday about a shooting with law enforcement that left one person dead earlier this week.

According to a press release given to The Dickinson Press by the Billings County Sheriff's Department, there was a standoff Tuesday 10 miles north of Belfield involving Kyle Quackenbush, 26, Linton, formerly of Dickinson.

Quackenbush, a 2004 graduate of Dickinson High School, allegedly aimed a rifle at the officers from the Dickinson Police Department's Southwest Tactical Team who attempted to serve an arrest warrant for an aggravated assault that stemmed from an incident earlier that day in Stark County.

In response to Quackenbush's actions, a DPD officer used deadly force. Quackenbush was pronounced dead at the scene, according to a press release.

The officer is on administrative leave due to the incident, according to the release.

The Dickinson Press made several attempts to contact Quackenbush's relatives Friday but was unsuccessful.

The North Dakota Bureau of Criminal Investigations in Bismarck is reviewing the use of deadly force, and the incident is under investigation.

According to Liz Brocker, a spokeswoman for the North Dakota Office of Attorney General, no further information could be released beyond what the Billings County state's attorney would allow.

Dickinson Police Department Capt. Joe Cianni also could not comment further on the incident because other law enforcement agencies were involved.

Although it happened outside of Belfield, Belfield City Councilman Harold Kubischta said it is difficult to wrap a mind around incidences like this.

"It's regrettable and you never want to hear about things like that happening anywhere," he said.
