1 dead in school bus collision
A two-vehicle, head-on collision involving an empty Dickinson Public School bus resulted in the death of one of the drivers Thursday on Highway 22, three miles north of Dickinson.
According to the North Dakota Highway Patrol, a 2004 Dodge Ram was traveling south on Highway 22 at 6:37 a.m. when it crossed the center divide for unknown reasons and struck head-on a 2004 International bus that was registered to Dickinson Public Schools.
The driver of the Dodge Ram, who is age 53, was pronounced dead at the scene. The driver's name was being withheld though.
Both the passenger of the Ram, Christopher Preston, 23, of Craig, Colo., and the bus driver, Ronald Hendricks, 62, of Dickinson, were transported to St. Joseph's Hospital in Dickinson for treatment.
DPS Superintendent Doug Sullivan said parents were contacted and informed that the bus would not be able to complete its route Thursday. He also said there were no children on board at the time of the collision.
Stark County Sheriff's Office, Dickinson Police Department, Dickinson Fire and Rescue and Dickinson Ambulance responded to the scene.
Traffic on Highway 22 was shut down temporarily between 32nd St. SW and 31st St. SW.
The two southbound lanes of Highway 22 were reopened before 8:30 a.m. Thursday, but both of the northbound lanes remained closed at that time.
