Another resident unhappy with county

A Stark County business owner won't see his property value get any lower after Stark County Commission members denied his request during Tuesday's meeting.

Richard Jordan owns RT Rentals and was one of a number of residents to dispute their 2008 property values in the past few months. County property values increased substantially in 2008 because the county got behind in reevaluating them.

Jordan said since the county increased the value, the taxes have gone from about $2,000 in 2006 to $10,000 in 2008.

"As a new business owner, I ended up paying for the county's inadequate accounting," Jordan said. "That's something they should have stayed on top of."

Stark County State's Attorney Tom Henning said the county didn't have the tools to stay on top of values, but does now. Stark County recently assessed all properties.

"It was something we had to do, it hadn't been done for a long time and we needed to get it done all at one time so it would be fair to everyone," Chairman Duane "Bucky" Wolf said. "It's not something that was just done arbitrarily by Stark County."

Commissioner Russ Hoff pointed out that Jordan paid $580,000 for the business and the county appraised it at $560,000, proving the appraisal is accurate.

The commission unanimously denied his request to have his property reassessed.

The commission tabled a similar matter at last month's meeting and Tuesday denied Bill Reiter's request to have his property reassessed.

In other matters:

r Gary Kostelecky, Stark County Emergency Manager, announced he will retire in May.

r The Stark County Park Board increased a lease agreement with the Southwest Motocross Association from $1 to $50.
