Area cowboys, cowgirls close to CNFR final round
CASPER, Wyo. -- A few North Dakota cowboys and cowgirls are sitting right on the edge of qualifying for the short round at the College National Finals Rodeo. But, they all have to wait until tonight to see if they've reached Saturday's championship round.
Eastern Wyoming College team roping duo of Derek Weinreis and Levi O'Keeffe put themselves in position to possibly make Saturday's short round after a 6-second run on Wednesday.
Weinreis, from Beach, and O'Keeffe, from Mohall, must wait until tonight to see if they reach the final round. They were in fifth place after Wednesday's performance.
Reeder native Jessica Ehlers, competing for Northwest College of Wyoming, missed on her third run in the breakaway roping Wednesday. Still, she has a 5.8-second three-round aggregate time, which could still be good enough to reach Saturday's short round.
Likewise, Dickinson State senior Ashley Schaper, a Halliday native, must wait on others to see if she can reach the finals. She had a time of 3.6 seconds in the third round Wednesday, giving her a 7.5 average on two head.
DSU junior Bobbi Grann had a time of 7.5 points in the goat tying Wednesday. She will likely miss the short round.
Riley Knoll, a DSU senior, didn't score in the third round of saddle bronc riding. However fellow senior, Laura Waldo, scored a 7.3 in goat tying putting her in a tie for 11th place and in the championship round on Saturday.
