April Baumgarten

The Dickinson Press’ newest newsroom member is a familiar face.

After editing The Hazen Star for a year and a half, April Baumgarten has returned to The Press as its assistant editor.

“I know a lot of people in this area and I know the team that I was coming back to was just going to be an awesome team to work with,” Baumgarten said. “I have some great chemistry with all of the reporters, the editor and even the advertising management here. It just seemed like it was a great fit, and it was perfect.”

Baumgarten, a Belfield native, graduated from Belfield High School in 2007. She went on to Jamestown College, now the University of Jamestown, where she double majored in political science/history and communications. She began working for The Press as a reporter in the summer of 2011 as its city and energy reporter. She then worked as the editor of the Hazen Star and Center Republican.

While Baumgarten said she will miss the small-town charm of Hazen, she is excited to be back in Dickinson.

“Dickinson in in the middle of the biggest boom that it has ever seen,” Baumgarten said. “There is so much growth happening here — and it’s not just with oil.”

As a life-long rancher, Baumgarten is also happy to be back in cattle country, where she grew up on a Hereford ranch.

“It’s not just agriculture anymore,” Baumgarten said. “They have to learn to cooperate with the (oil industry) and work with it so they can live in harmony and grow together.”
