BEACH -- A proposed rail spur that would alleviate the Beach Grain Cooperative’s issues with trains took its first step toward becoming a reality Monday morning.

The Beach Zoning Board unanimously recommended that the city rezone 156 acres of land on the east side of town from agricultural to commercial, zoning board chair Al Begger said.

The land, which would be purchased by Beach Grain from a local farm, would be the site of a $7M railroad extension where grain cars could be moved when being loaded by the elevator.

Begger said about 30 people were at the 8 a.m. meeting. The proposal has sparked conversation within the community because of its proximity to existing homes and others being built.

The Beach City Council will review the recommendation at its regular meeting Monday night.
