Bellon has hat trick as Mandan beats DHS
Lauren Hansen sees the good with the bad when she looks at the Dickinson girls hockey team.
On Thursday night, the coach watched her team play two solid periods and let one slip away from them.
"We had a good first period, a good third," Hansen said. "The second (period) was a little rough for us."
Caitlin Bellon notched a hat trick with Mandan's final three goals, two of them in the second period, as the Braves defeated a feisty Dickinson girls hockey team 5-2 at the Dickinson Recreation Center.
Bellon scored back-to-back goals a little more than 5 minutes apart in the second period to put Mandan ahead 4-1.
"It started out kind of as a slow game," Mandan head coach Dewitt Mack said. "Both teams were struggling to get control of the puck. I think in the second period, it kind of swung our way a little bit."
Mandan took a 2-1 lead after the first period following goals from Mariah Marsh and Solvei Stenslie.
Dickinson freshman Emily Suwyn knotted it 1-1 with 6:21 remaining in the period, but Stenstlie answered at the 3:56 mark to put the Braves (5-8, 3-8 state) on top for good.
"We have our good days and we have our bad days, but overall, it's coming along a lot better," Dickinson junior captain Madison Kinzel said.
The Midgets (1-12, 0-9 state) are beginning to show multiple signs of improvement, including on a nice goal-and-assist by Kinzel from Kayla Wallace with 6:22 left in the third.
Kinzel said the Midgets began putting good pressure on Mandan in the attacking zone during the goal.
"The goal me and Kayla had, she was really pressuring hard in the zone and that's something we really need to work on this year," Kinzel said.
Breanna Chamberlain stopped 38 shots in just her second start in net for the Midgets. The eighth-grader held back a flurry of shots at the end of the third period.
Aubrey Quintus had 12 saves to help Mandan preserve the win.
Dickinson visits Minot at 5:30 p.m. MST on Saturday and Hansen said the team has improved since it lost to the Majettes 19-0 at home on Dec. 17.
"The girls are playing a lot better and it shows that they're improving," Hansen said. "I think that's something we're pretty proud of."
