GRAND FORKS -- Mark Gibson has coached a lot of quality football teams in his 14 seasons at Bismarck High School, a span in which his teams have played in nine state championship games.

When it comes to defense, none of those Demon teams have done it better than this year's squad.

The stingy Demons capped a 12-0 season by defeating Bismarck Century 21-0 on Friday in the Class 3A championship game of the Dakota Bowl at the Alerus Center. It was the fifth state title for Gibson-coached Bismarck teams.

"We've had good defenses before," Gibson said. "From top to bottom, this is our best defense. We've been bigger. But our overall team speed is phenomenal. We just don't have a weakness.

"And playing our cross-town rival, I think our kids play with a bit of a chip on their shoulders."

That showed in the win against Century -- the Demons' fifth shutout of the season and fourth in their last five games. Bismarck didn't give up more than one touchdown in any of its 12 games.

Bismarck held a 354-79 advantage in total offense. Century averaged only 1.4 yards per play and 1.0 yards per rushing attempt.

"Their defense is very quick and very tall," Century coach Ron Wingenbach said. "That's a lethal combination. We did have some drives into their half of the field. But we didn't take advantage of them."

Instead, the offense in the game centered around Layne Johs. The Bismarck running back picked up 199 rushing yards on 29 carries. He was the only player on the field who found the end zone, scoring on touchdown runs of 29 yards and 49 yards in the second quarter and 2 yards in the third quarter. Johs was named Class 3A senior player of the year.

"Layne's got power. He's got speed," Gibson said. "He's a dude, our bread-and-butter guy. When the game is on the line, you want the ball in his hands."

The state title was the second straight and fourth in the past five seasons for the Demons.
