The Bismarck girls hockey team quickly gained an early lead and continued to add to it.

The Blizzard scored six goals in the first period en route to a 16-0 win over Dickinson on Thursday at the Dickinson Recreation Center.

"I think it was just a hard game from the get-go," Dickinson head coach Lauren Hansen said. "I'm not really sure if we started off on the best foot. We tried to regain our composure, but it was a little tough."

The loss was especially tough for the Midgets because it was senior night. Kennedy Takle is Dickinson's lone senior and she's not ready to go.

"I don't want to be done," Takle said. "I'm not ready to be done. I've been on this rink since I was 3 (years old). I'm ready to be done with this."

Bismarck worked the puck well between the forwards and defensemen. That led to senior defenseman Taylor Erhardt earning a hat trick in the opening period.

"We were pleased with the way that the girls played," Bismarck head coach Matt Strinden said. "They played with a lot of energy and worked our systems the way we've been working them for the last week or so."

Bismarck's leading scorers, Brianna Flynn and Haleigh Springan, also netted hat tricks. Flynn scored the first goal just 77 seconds into the opening period.

"It's always nice to get contributions from everybody," Strinden said. "Our top line certainly scores for us quite a bit, but we like to see some of our second and third lines work our system. Top to bottom, we had good effort from all the girls."

After the first period, Strinden said he didn't want to run up the score, but he can't tell his girls to stop playing.

"When you get a big lead, you can't tell girls not to play," he said. "We want them to continue to work on our systems and do those kinds of things."

Hansen said she knew playing Bismarck meant the Midgets were in for a tough game.

"We played them actually not too long ago," Hansen said. "It was a tough game and the girls were skating hard. We just weren't on beat tonight."

The Midgets started with eighth-grader Breanna Chamberlain in goal, but halfway through the second period seventh-grader LeAnne Brydl came on in relief. The two goalies combined to make 36 saves.

"They have the confidence and they are good goalies for such a young age," Takle said.

Dickinson had just one shot on goal.

Strinden was impressed with his team's defensive effort.

"Defensively, the girls did a nice job," he said. "They did a good job of getting back and back-checking. We didn't give them a lot of opportunities and kept them to the outside."

The Midgets hit the road to play Williston at 6 p.m. today.
