Blue Hawks baseball team tops Jimmies, Vikings
VALLEY CITY -- The Dickinson State baseball team started the Dakota Athletic Conference preseason tournament off on the right note.
The Blue Hawks defeated Jamestown College 2-1 and Valley City State 5-2 on Saturday.
Derek Carley's RBI single in the sixth inning drove in Jacob Muir for game-winning run against Jamestown.
Jon Mendoza went 1-for-2 with a double while Jake Coyle drove in a sacrifice fly in the third inning for the Blue Hawks' first run.
C.J. Ketron improved to 3-2 on the mound after throwing seven innings and striking out six. Paul Roers was charged with the loss.
For the Jimmies (14-10-1), Nico Moreno drove in the team's lone run going 1-for-3.
Against Valley City State, DSU jumped out to an early lead and scored three runs in the fifth inning.
Mendoza led the Blue Hawks (14-12) with two hits and two RBI. Carley added two hits and a RBI while Justin Elizondo went 1-for-3 with two RBI.
Erik Bastio started for DSU and earned the win after five innings of work. Bobby King came in for relief, but got into trouble in the final inning. Andrew Grafton picked up the final two outs.
The Blue Hawks continue the tournament against Jamestown College and Valley City State beginning at 11 a.m. today.
