Blue Hawks continue roll, handle Mayville State

The weather was warm, the wind was dead and the Dickinson State softball team’s bats once again were flying.

The key to the big wins all season has been getting on the board early which wasn’t a problem for the Blue Hawks in their doubleheader against Mayville State.

DSU took two double-digit wins over the Lady Comets 11-1, 11-1, in their second to last home game of the season on Friday at Dickinson’s North Complex.

“We came out really hot and usually when we score in the first innings, we tend to go with that,” DSU right fielder Kailey Olcott said, who finished 2 for 3 with two RBI and a run. “It builds momentum and we tend to do really well.”

Starting pitcher Regan Lawrence kept Mayville State at bay in game one by allowing one run and three hits over five innings. Lawrence was pitching a no-hitter through three innings but center fielder Samantha Swimley broke it up as she doubled to center. Swimley scored on the next at-bat off a single by shortstop Alexxa Sanabria.

DSU scored at least one run in every inning with its biggest outings in the second and fourth, scoring five and four runs, respectively.

Lawrence led the inning off with a double and designated hitter Janell LaRont — finished 3 for 3 with two runs and two RBI — drove her in with a two-run home run. Rebecca Lopez and Alex Vargas each hit RBI singles and Lindsay Sullivan had a RBI double as well in the second.

Lawrence, LaRont and Vargas each had two-run games while the latter two batters were 3 for 3 at the plate. The Blue Hawks tacked on four more runs in the bottom of the fourth for breathing room, which allowed the game to end at five innings. Mayville State pitcher Felicia Gonzales lasted all four inning and allowed 11 runs (10 earned) on 17 hits.

“We have a good thing going, they’re fun to watch, they keep the intensity, they have each other’s backs and we’re able to score a lot of runs right now and not give up a lot of runs,” DSU head coach Kristen Fleury said. “At the end of the day, that’s what you want.”

The Blue Hawks carried momentum over from game one into game two and led off with a three-run opening inning.

Sullivan hit a two-run double and came home as LaRont singled to center field. DSU wasn’t able to generate any offense in the second but opened the flood gates in the third.

Sullivan homered to left on the first pitch she saw and the hitting became infectious for the rest of the lineup. The Blue Hawks scored eight runs on eight hits which included LaRont hitting an RBI double, followed by a RBI single from pitcher Tiffany Morgan — who pitched four innings and allowed one run, five hits and struck out seven — and Lopez and a triple from Vargas.

Sullivan finished 2 for 4 with two runs and four RBI and Lopez went 2 for 2 with 2 runs and a RBI. Yslas had a multi-run game, going 1 for 2 at the plate, drove in two runs and 2 RBI.

“We talked about how all year our bats have been contagious and that’s kind of what they were,” Fleury said. “We were able to score eight runs in that inning and had some big hits through the whole lineup.”

The Blue Hawks are undefeated at home and look to clinch their final home series against Mayville State in another doubleheader at 1 p.m. today.

“If we just keep doing what we’re doing, we’ll probably make it pretty far,” LaRont said. “Just staying positive and relaxed even being in Jamestown being away from our home field and stuff. Just stay relaxed and have fun no matter what.”
