MISSOULA, Mont. -- The No. 17-ranked Dickinson State men's cross country team had its eyes on the Frontier Conference championship Friday.

So did No. 8-ranked Lewis-Clark State.

Both teams went home disappointed, however, as unranked Carroll College bunched up its top five runners, putting four in the top 10, to claim the Frontier title at Bill Roberts Golf Course.

Carroll had 42 team points while DSU and Lewis-Clark State tied for second with 52 points.

"It's a little bittersweet," DSU head coach Mike Nekuda said. "It was a battle. It was close."

Lewis-Clark senior Dave Marks won the individual title with a time of 25 minutes, 50.2 seconds.

DSU put four runners into the top 10, the all-conference cutoff.

Junior Abdi Ismail was fourth (26:47), freshman Dante Carter was sixth (27:04.2) and junior Denis Patrick finished 10th (27:22).

Eddie Meneses was 14th in 27:49.5 and Dustin Sandbak rounded out DSU's team scoring in 18th with a time of 28:09.4.

All of Lewis-Clark's runners finished in the top 17.

The Blue Hawks must now wait to see for Sunday's final regular-season conference rankings to come out to find out if they will advance to the national meet as a team and, if not, if they will advance any individual runners.

"There's no guarantees," Nekuda said.

On the women's side, DSU took last out of sixth teams while junior Brittany Young earned all-conference honors with a 10th-place finish in 19:43.8.

No. 5-ranked Carroll College won with 32 points. No. 12 Lewis-Clark was second with 53.

Rounding out DSU's team scores, Stormie Sickler was 31st at 21:58.6, Breezy Bolton was 33rd at 22:14.2 and Shelby Snare was 37th at 23:59.9 and Alysse Charlesworth was 39th at 25:34.

"I'll tell you one thing, I know the guys and the gals laid it all out there," Nekuda said. "That's all I can ask for."
