Blue Hawks' late comeback falls short

VALLEY CITY -- A last-second shot by Dickinson State backup guard Anthony Hodges fell short and Valley City State escaped Osmon Fieldhouse with a 63-61 nonconference victory Saturday afternoon.

Sekani Milligen had a game-high 22 points and seven rebounds as the Vikings withstood a comeback by Hodges and the Blue Hawks.

In the final 2 minutes, Anthony Hodges came off the bench with the Blue Hawks trailing 59-49 and scored all 10 of his points and didn't miss a shot -- that was until it mattered the most.

Hodges was 3 of 4 from the field and 2 of 3 from 3-point range, all of which came in the last 2 minutes of the second half. His only miss? A 3-pointer as time expired that would have won the game for DSU.

"Just a great look and it just hit the back of the rim," DSU head coach Ty Orton said. "You can't get a better shot. That's what we wanted, it just didn't fall."

DSU trailed 54-40 with 6½ minutes left when it began chipping away.

"The kids didn't quit," Orton said. "That's something that was impressive."

Johnie Sanders had 16 points, four rebounds and three steals to lead the Blue Hawks (1-2). Matt Lee had nine points and nine rebounds.

Aaron Duske had 15 points and Gus Kueber added 11 for the Vikings (4-1), who are ranked No. 24 in NAIA Division II.

DSU visits Northern State at 3 p.m. today and play Mayville State at 7 p.m. Friday in the Sam Milanovich Classic at Scott Gymnasium.
