Blue Hawks take a pair of wins against Valley City State

BILLINGS, Mont. -- Since going 1-5 in a six-game stretch, the Dickinson State softball team has rattled off five straight wins.

The Blue Hawks used strong pitching and batting performances to beat Valley City State 6-1, 9-2 on Friday.

DSU senior Taysia Kaufman has convincingly won her last three starts and helped stifle the Vikings in the opening game. Kaufman pitched seven innings, allowing one run on seven hits, while striking out five.

The bats came alive with runners in scoring position for the Blue Hawks (16-13) and didn't die down all day.

DSU freshman Alex Vargas went 1-for-3 with three RBIs, while Monique Yslas was 1-for-3 with two RBIs and scored a run. Kaufman helped herself out, going 1-for-2 and scored two runs. Dani Benito also supplied a hit and scored a run.

For the Vikings (3-19), Brittany Lehner and Caitlin Giesbrecht each had two hits, while starting pitcher Samantha Nalley gave up six runs in 4 1/3 innings.

In the second game, Regan Lawrence and Nicole Lobato combined for seven innings, allowing two runs on five hits, while striking out seven.

DSU sophomore Janel LaRont drove in two runs and went 3-for-4 at the plate. Vargas was 3-for-4 with a double and scored a run. Kaufman added three hits, scored three runs and drove in one run. Benito supplied two hits and scored a run.

Lehner, who went 2-for-3, scored Valley City State's two runs of the game as Hilary Kulczewski and Giesbrecht each had one RBI. Torri Fenton was tagged with the loss after throwing five innings, allowing seven runs on 10 hits and striking out one.

The Blue Hawks continue their four-game series with the Vikings beginning at 11 a.m. today.
