Like much of western North Dakota, the city of Bowman is growing.

Growth might be best illustrated by a multi-million dollar airport project, which got underway last fall.

After beginning dirt work on a strip of land east of the Bowman County seat community in late 2013, the job is scheduled to continue sometime this spring, Bowman Airport Authority board member Bob Morland said.

“They’re supposed to start up with the surfacing and electrical work soon, hopefully,” Morland said. “Those are major projects. We’re looking at trying to bid out a couple of buildings in a couple of months, too. All the dirt work was completed last year. It looks like a runway, it just doesn’t have a surface on it.”

Completion of the new airport — which, Morland said, is expected to come with a price tag of about $14 million when all is said and done — is slated for some time in 2015.

“We’re thinking late winter or early spring of 2015 at this point,” Morland said. “Technically, we should be ready for some things in October or November. But I’m not sure we’ll have some of the other structures and have fuel and all of those kinds of things.”

The runway for the new airport will be 5,700 feet long, according to the airport authority.
