Capitals net OT winner, beat DHS
The Dickinson High boys hockey team flirted back to its old ways.
Layne Hohn ripped a quick wrist shot with 2 minutes, 59 seconds left in overtime to lead Oahe of Pierre, S.D., past Dickinson 6-5 during a nonconference game on Friday at Dickinson Recreation Center.
“We were just fighting ourselves, because we kept getting penalties and giving them all kinds of opportunities,” Oahe head coach Rob Kittay said. “We got that good goal.”
The Capitals were on a momentum boost from the start of overtime. Oahe scored the game-tying goal with 33 seconds remaining in the game. Brandon Swenson scored on a rebound from Will Gordon.
Dickinson head coach Dallas Kuntz said the team has trouble staying focused from the drop of the puck to the end of the game.
“I’m disappointed,” he said. “They outworked us in all facets of the game.”
The players could sense it too. Dickinson senior defenseman Tim Knudson said the team was just going through the motions.
“We weren’t all there today,” he said. “Thank goodness this wasn’t a conference. We didn’t go as hard as we probably should.
“We didn’t play our positions very well either. We just kind of going there and doing our own thing.”
The Midgets scored three goals in the third period. Michael McChesney netted two of the three, while Gannon Karsky added the third goal in the period.
Dickinson two other goals came from Tony Kostelecky in the first period and Kass Dvorak in the second.
The Capitals had a different player score each of their six goals. Oahe only had two players finish with multiple points — Gordon, who finished with a goal and an assist, and Riley Bren with two assists.
“I thought we played OK,” Kittay said. “We gave up a couple of power-play goals, but we got a couple power-play goals on them.”
The Midgets’ goalie Brett Schweitzer finished with 28 saves, while Oahe’s goalie Alex Meagher had 29.
Dickinson returns to the ice to host West Region opponent Bismarck High at 7:30 p.m. Thursday.
“The positive you can take out of this is the only way to go is up,” Kuntz said. “We took great strides after the holiday break and now we took a couple steps back.”
