SENTINEL BUTTE -- Jesse Wright knows he can pull off a great ride.

But pulling off a saddle bronc ride like he did during the short round of the Champions Ride Match on Sunday at Home on the Range doesn't come often.

The Milford, Utah, cowboy scored a 92-point ride on the way to winning the short round. Wright had a 75-point ride in the long round to finish second in the average with 167 points.

"I'm speechless," Wright said.

Wright, ranked No. 9 in the world, did it riding Stroker's Ace.

"I hoped he'd be good," Wright said. "I didn't know he'd be 92-point good. I'm happy. I'm plum tickled."

The No. 1 rider in the world, Wade Sundell of Boxholm, Iowa, showed why he's the top rider this year by stringing together two rides over 80 to win the average and the Champions Ride title.

Sundell scored 82 in the long round and finished the day with an 88-point ride in the short round on Pink Painted Lizard, an NFR qualifier.

He got a reride in the long go after originally scoring a 71.

"That's just a great deal," Sundell said.

It's the first time Sundell has come to the Champions Ride. It's an event he won't pass up in 2011.

"I can't wait to come back next year," Sundell said.

Two of the leaders in the long round had a tough go in the short round.

Jake Costello of Newell, S.D., the leader in the Professional Rodeo Cowboys Association's Montana Circuit was first in the long round with an 87-point ride. His 75-point ride in the short round put him in a fourth-place tie in the average.

Josh Reynolds of Corvallis, Mont., was second after the long round with an 85-point ride, but was bucked off in the short round.

Dickinson's Dusty Hausauer came away with an 81 in the long round that put him a three-way tie for fifth. But his short round lasted 4 seconds after being bucked off by Korkow Rodeo's Vidalia, the two-time Badlands Circuit saddle bronc of the year.

Next year's Champions Ride moves to a Saturday with the event slated for Aug. 6.
