Friday and Saturday marked the first two times Dickinson State senior Bobbi Jo Grann competed in barrel racing with the horse named Bell.

After the two-day performance, she might be giving the horse a call in the near future.

Grann, who closed out the season as the women’s all-around champion of the Great Plains Region, won the barrel racing with a combined time of 32.05 seconds during the Blue Hawk Stampede on Saturday at the DSU Outdoor Arena.

“I’m so excited,” Grann said. “It was so much fun and it went way better than I could have imagined.”

With running the second-fastest time on Friday (15.93 seconds), it was the time that made Grann worried — it was Saturday’s rainy conditions.

Nonetheless, Grann and Bell ran the fastest time at 16.12 seconds.

“It’s scary to go out and run in the mud, because you don’t know how your horse can handle it,” she said. “I trusted her and she trusted me, so it went really good.”

Grann won the women’s all-around title at the Blue Hawk Stampede after winning barrel racing and placing fourth in goat tying.

Coming into the weekend, Grann knew she was leading the women’s all-around in the Great Plains Region, but she didn’t let it affect her.

“You can’t really think about it too much, because if anything, it will hurt you,” she said. “You just have to go out and do your best every time.”

On the men’s side, the Blue Hawks were crowned Great Plains Region champions after they collected a pair of wins.

Sophomore Dalton Rixen and senior Cody Hilzendeger won saddle bronc riding and team roping, respectively.

Rixen was the only cowboy to score on two rides. He finished with a combined score of 129 points.

“We tried to do our best and hopefully we could just come out on top,” Rixen said.

Hilzendeger teamed with Samantha Jorgenson of Black Hills State to win team roping. The duo posted the best time on Friday and Saturday. They finished with a combined time of 18.2 seconds.

DSU also received a runner-up finish from senior Jordan Pelton in bareback riding. Sophomore Skye Schaper placed third in goat tying, while freshman Jordyn Schaefer was fourth in breakaway roping.

“I feel like I rode the horse that I got close to the best of my ability,” Pelton said. “I’m fairly happy with that.”

As for the rainy conditions, Pelton didn’t let it bother him.

“It’s kind of inconvenient,” he said with a laugh. “It’s just business as usual. You just get done what you need to get done and try not to let those kinds of things affect you.

Though DSU sophomore Cameron Morman only collected 30 points in steer wrestling, he won the men’s all-around victory by 66 points over Iowa Central Community College’s Ethan Hecht.

DSU cowboys and cowgirls have more than a month to prepare for the College National Finals Rodeo which begins June 15 in Casper, Wyo.

“We get a little break now, which is nice, but then we have a lot of work to do to get ready for that,” Grann said. “There’s a lot of preparations that we need to make. It’s tough when school is out and the whole team isn’t practicing together anymore. We got to practice individually.”
