Comets hit walk-off to edge DSU

VALLEY CITY — In the playoffs, anything can happen.

No. 6 seed Dickinson State held No. 2 seed Mayville State to a 6-6 game into the bottom of the ninth inning, but couldn’t pull off the upset.

Mayville’s John Cahill singled to right-center which advanced John Pistulka to third. He went home on a DSU error.

The Comets edged the Blue Hawks 7-6 in the NAIA Unaffiliated/North Star-Frontier Conference Tournament on Friday.

It was a tough loss for DSU to swallow, but a battle until the end.

Mayville swept DSU (6-0, 14-3, 3-1, 11-0) in the regular season and had an early 3-0 lead after the first inning. Refusing to go down, the Blue Hawks scored six runs in the sixth for its first-ever lead over the Comets all season.

After Eric Seiler — who pitched six innings, allowed six runs (five earned) on 12 hits with five strikeouts — hit a solo home run, DSU scored on four consecutive at-bats starting off with a RBI single by shortstop Joe Binstock.

Right fielder Jordan Tescher hit a sacrifice fly to bring in Jeff Van Cleave and then Jake Coyle doubled to left-center. On a 1-1 count, Eric Contreras hit a two-run home run to end the scoring spree.

Seiler and Jake Coyle each went 1 for 4 with a run and RBI and Contreras finished 1 for 3 at the plate with a run and two RBI.

Mayville came back to tie the game with a three-run sixth inning with back-to-back home runs by Cahill and left fielder Aaron Miller. Cahill was 2 for 4 with a run and two RBI and Miller too was 2 for 4 with a run and RBI.

The Comets used three pitchers over the course of the game as Alex Brockpahler started and lasted six innings with six runs (one earned), four hits and four strikeouts.

Todd Leavitt came in for two innings and allowed one hit while Kidder picked up the win and was clean across the board.

DSU’s Chas Allen was credited with the loss and gave up one run on four hits with two strikeouts over 2 1/3 innings.

The Blue Hawks will play Presentation College (S.D.) in the elimination game at 11 a.m. today.
