Comets sweep Blue Hawks baseball
MAYVILLE — After winning four-straight games, the Dickinson State baseball team was shut down by Mayville State.
Alex Brockpahler started for Mayville in the opener. He threw a five-hit shutout over six innings with five strikeouts.
The Comets opened the floodgates and scored five runs in the bottom of the third, capitalizing on DSU errors. Center fielder Spencer Kidder reached base on a bobbled ball by DSU’s Eric Seiler which also allowed two runs to score.
In the next at-bat, Spencer Mallonee got on a miss catch by Joe Binstock followed by a RBI double from right fielder John Pistulka.
Pistulka went 2 for 3 with a run and two RBI while Kidder added two runs and two RBI.
For DSU, Eric Contreras started and was credited with the loss. Over three innings, Contreras gave up four runs on six hits, walked one and struck out two. Brock Overbo pitched the final inning of the game and allowed two hits and Mayville’s final run.
The Blue Hawks were able to generate a little more offense in the second game, but to no avail.
DSU got on the board in the fourth inning as first baseman Jeff VanCleave scored on a missed catch by shortstop Bryan Jacklitch. VanCleave scored again in the top of the sixth on a two-run single up the middle by third baseman Jordan Tescher.
VanCleave finished 2 for 4 with two runs and Tescher went 1 for 2 with two RBI.
Mayville’s offense was relentless and scored at least one run in every inning but the sixth. Mallonee, Kidder and Jospeh Ferreira each had multi-run games, scoring four, two and two, respectfully. Pistulka and Christian Berry had big games as Pistulka went 2 for 5 with a run and five RBI and Berry hit a three-run home run in the bottom of the seventh.
On the mound for DSU, Seiler lasted five innings, but gave up six runs on nine hits and walked five batters. Aaron Dick picked up the win for Mayville and allowed three runs on seven hits and struck out seven batters over six innings.
The Blue Hawks return home and host a doubleheader against the University of Mary starting at 4 p.m. on Monday.
