Toddler, whose mother was stabbed during abduction, found safe; suspect arrested

Convicted murderer released on parole

Richard John LaFuente, convicted of a murder on the Spirit Lake Indian Reservation, was released on parole Thursday, according to the Minnesota Innocence Project, which is working to overturn his conviction.

He was sentenced to life in prison after Jerome Edward Peltier was murdered in 1983 but has maintained his innocence. The Project said even the family of the victim testified on his behalf believing he was not the killer.

LaFuente was in a Texas federal prison and was released after an appeal to the U.S. Parole Commission was filed by the Project, a nonprofit group that investigates claims of wrongful conviction.
