Davis scores 19 as Braves down Midgets

BELCOURT — The signs of playing its first game showed for the Dickinson High girls basketball team.

Turtle Mountain, on the other hand, opened its season with a 74-38 win over Bismarck St. Mary’s on Friday. The Braves repeated the performance with a 62-34 win against the Midgets on Saturday.

“We started out real slow,” Dickinson head coach Dan Pender said. “They were up 21 points and we cut down to nine at the break. We did some nice things and got some good ball movement in the first half for about five minutes.”

At halftime, the Braves held a nine-point, 33-24, lead. In the first 14 minutes of the second half, the Midgets (0-1, 0-1 West Region) scored one point. Dickinson finished the game 12 of 61 (20 percent) from the field, while the Braves were 23 of 65 (35 percent).

“The ball just wasn’t falling in,” Pender said. “They were blanking shots in and we weren’t making anything. We just didn’t shoot very well tonight.”

Avery Privratsky led the Midgets with 12 points, while the two eighth-graders Raegen Linster and Lexi Jordheim combined for 18 points.

Winter Monette scored a game-high 20 points for the Braves (2-0, 2-0 West Region). Monette was 6 of 12 from 3-point range. Ashley Davis added 19 points and Ramie DeCoteau had 14.

The Midgets look to build for the opening game experience going into their home opener against Dawson County (Mont.) at 7:30 p.m. Thursday.

“This was our WDA game and first game of the season and I think we did some decent things,” Pender said. “We just have to have to go back to work and work a little bit harder in practice. There are things we need to work on.”
