Dickinson State adds 4 more national qualifiers
GILLETTE, Wyo. — It was another strong weekend for the Dickinson State track and field teams, as the Blue Hawks picked up four more national qualifiers at the Eagles and Jackets Invite Saturday hosted by Chadron State (Neb.).
Senior Hailey Schaper was the only qualifier for the women and met the A standard in the high jump, with a height of 5.6 feet. On the men’s side, the Blue Hawks met the A standard in the distance medley relay and 800 meter run and met the B standard in the 200 meter run.
The distance medley team consisted of seniors Dustin Sandbak, Nathan Magstadt, Jonathan Aman and Dante Carter and completed the race in 10 minutes, 23.64 seconds. Carter tied for first place in the 800 with the University of Wyoming’s No. 1 runner junior Harry Fisher at 1:54.34. This was Carter’s fourth event of the season to meet a qualifying time.
Junior Breyan Miller finished in second place in the 200 at 22.21 seconds and met the B standard for the event.
There were several DSU runners who just missed qualifying for nationals Saturday. Senior Brittany Young was three tenths of a second short in the women’s 800 meter run and finished with a 2:21.8 time. The men’s 1600 meter relay team — consisted of freshman Michael Palczewski, Miller, senior Corey Gill and Magstadt at anchor — missed qualifying by one second and ran 3:23.83. Magstadt had the fastest time and ran his leg in 49.1 seconds.
In the men’s 60 meter hurdles freshman Jose Charro ran 8.46 seconds and missed qualifying at six tenths of a second.
DSU looks to add more athletes to its qualifier list at the Bison Open at 10 a.m. Saturday.
