DILLON, Mont. — It was the Dickinson State women’s basketball team’s best performance in weeks.

Montana Western defeated them in a tight game 69-67, but DSU head coach Mark Graupe was pleased to see his team’s effort back on the court.

The Blue Hawks were down by nine, 35-36, at the half, but were able to rally back in the second to nearly top off the Bulldogs, who beat them 73-60 at home last week. DSU’s three seniors, guards Mariah Duran and Dawne Degel and forward Jess Bygate each scored double-digits with 16, 13 and 10 respectively. Junior forward Ja’Lisa Gatlin led the team with seven rebounds.

Western was led by Sammi Bignell in scoring and rebounding with 22 and 8 respectively.

Like the last time the two teams met, free throws played a key role in who won and who lost. The Bulldogs shot 26 for 34 (76 percent) at the line, while DSU was only able to make 9 of 15 (60 percent). Jenna Banks contributed 12 points of Western’s score, 10 of which were at the free-throw line.

DSU returns home for its home series finale and plays host to Carroll College at 2 p.m. Saturday.
