Throughout a majority of the season, Dickinson Trinity freshman Kennedy Keator has been within less than a half-second of qualifying for the Class B state track and field meet in the 100- and 200-meter dashes.

Her worries have been put to rest.

Keator ran state-qualifying times in the 100 (12.86 seconds) and 200 (26.63 seconds) during the Trinity Last Chance Invitational on Wednesday at the Biesiot Activities Center.

"Kennedy has been so close so many times this year," Trinity co-head coach Andrew DesRosier said. "The ball never quite bounced her way and today she put both races in the books. It was nice to get it done before the region meet."

The freshman runner, who competed for Dickinson High last season, has state meet experience, but nothing like this year. By qualifying in the 100 and 200, she also helped the Titans by qualifying in multiple relays.

"There were times that you could tell that she was getting impatient," DesRosier said. "She wanted to get (the 100 and 200) in the books and she had to keep focusing. She's been essential to our relay teams the entire season."

Also on the girls side, Mott-Regent junior Abby Honeyman qualified in the 300 hurdles (47.03 seconds), while Bowman County's 400 relay team of Kendra Swanson, Justyce Duffield, Brittany Hansey and Shelbi McGee ran a state-qualifying time of 52.75 seconds. Nearly the same team with Ashlee Edwards and minus Kendra Swanson ran a qualifying time in the 800 relay, but dropped the baton.

Hansey added another event to her state meet as she qualified in the long jump with a distance of 17 feet, 3½ inches. She took third in the event.

"We got a long jumper in the girls," Bowman County head coach Jon Jahner said. "Our relays were OK, but what we came to get done, I'm satisfied with."

Dickinson's Ali Moody also qualified in the long jump (17-3), while Mott-Regent's Alyssa Olin and Richardton-Taylor's Halle Olson went first and second, respectively, in the javelin. Olin had a toss of 128-8, which is a new season high, and Olson threw 117-6.

On the boys side, Dickinson's Michael Cherwinski nabbed his first state-qualifying time in the 100 (11.39). Heart River's Cole Hlebechuk also ran a state-qualifying time in the event at 11.41.

Dickinson's Jace Dukart, who has qualified in the 100, 200, 400 and multiple relays, achieved a season-best time in the 200 by more than a half-second at 22.44.

"Today was supposed to be kind of a workout in a way," Dukart said. "We tried to get our best workout in. The wind kind of helped on the 200 and I was able to get a really good time."

Also for Dickinson, Austin Mack ran state-qualifying times in the 110 hurdles (15.7 seconds) and 300 hurdles (40.17). Wyatt Kainz, a freshman at Dickinson, leaped his way into the state meet after winning the long jump with a season-best 21-1½. Senior Taren Staudinger finished runner-up in the triple jump with a state-qualifying distance of 42-5, while teammate junior Levi Jordheim was third and punched his ticket to state with a leap of 41-9.

Trinity's Mason Heth improved his height in the pole vault, clearing 12-6. The Trinity senior had a previous best of 12 feet earlier this season. Bowman County's relay of John Yale, Levi McKitrick, Tanner Fischer and Michael Palczewski ran a state-qualifying time of 3:35.88.

"Without giving out any secrets, and Michael Palczewski isn't a secret, but we want to run him in as many as opens as we can," Jahner said.

For the team scores on the girls side, Dickinson placed first with 105.75 points while Trinity finished runner-up with 102.12 and Mott-Regent rounded out the top three with 74.25.

On the boys side, Dickinson won the 172 points and Bismarck High was runner-up with 91. Bowman County ended the day in third with 75.

Trinity travels to Beach for the Southwest Region Meet at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, while Dickinson hosts the West Region Meet at 9 a.m. at the BAC.

"Everyone performed well today," DesRosier said. "Now, we are looking forward to our two most important meets of the year."
