MINOT — The Dickinson High softball team didn’t wait long to put Fargo North in a deficit.

The Midgets posted six runs in the first two innings.


Dickinson — the No. 2 seed from the West — used the early run production to defeat the Spartans — No. 3-seeded from the East — 8-5 during the North Dakota Class A state softball tournament.

In the first inning, the Midgets’ opening run came on a Mackee Hoffmann RBI double. Dickinson senior Riana Cooper drove in the next run, while Madison Jahner scored on an error.

Jahner went 2 for 2 with a double, two RBI and scored two runs. Hoffmann posted a RBI double, while Cooper went 1 for 4 with a RBI.

During the second inning, Dickinson’s Riley Cooper scored on a wild and Jahner posted a two-run double to left field. The Midgets’ leadoff hitter — Rachel Jahner — went 2 for 3 and scored two runs.

The Midgets’ senior pitcher Haley Butterfield picked up the win. She went 5⅓ innings, allowed three runs (one earned) on five hits and struck out eight. Madison Jahner finished the final 1⅔ innings, allowed two earned runs and gave up seven walks.

Fargo North’s Alexis Olek posted a pair of hits including a RBI and a run scored. Samantha Trana, Santana Roder, Aundra Carter and Madeline Deleon each had a hit. Deleon was tagged with the loss after she went six innings, allowed eight runs (six earned) on seven hits, walked seven and struck out three.

With the win the Midgets have a 27-5 record, they continue the state tournament with West Fargo in the semifinals at 3:30 p.m. today. Dickinson hasn’t play the Packers this season.
