"I'm looking forward to the race," he said. "I think it is an obligation that you try to represent the people of your district. If you don't have people step forward and run and represent you, then you kind of deserve what you get."

District 36 Sen. George Nodland announced he would not seek a second term, leaving the race "open," Brauhn said.

Brauhn has worked with many state legislators over the years, giving him opportunities to testify at multiple legislative hearings, according to a press release.

Understanding the legislative process and session will give him an advantage, he said.

District 36 Rep. Shirley Meyer will run with Brauhn. The district needs a third person from the Democratic Party to run for the second House of Representatives seat.

Brauhn and his wife, Mary Ann, live in Dickinson.
