Down to the wire: Dickinson Trinity wins boys, girls team titles during the Southwest Region Meet
Dickinson North Dakota 1815 1st Street West 58602

In his peripheral vision, Dickinson Trinity junior Jace Kruger saw a flash of a baton.

But, Kruger didn’t wait around to see the rest of Killdeer junior Lewis Dobitz during the final stretch of the 1,600-meter relay.

The Titans edged Killdeer in the 1,600 relay and in the team title during the Southwest Region track and field meet on Saturday at the Biesiot Activities Center. Trinity completed the sweep by winning the girls team title as well.

“I knew (Dobitz) was there, so I started to kick it in gear,” Kruger said. “I’ve never had so much of a crowd to cheer for me. Every step I had to stride as hard as I could. I wanted it so bad.”

When Dobitz received the baton for the final leg of the 1,600 relay, Kruger had about a 10 to 15 meter lead.

The Killdeer junior nearly chased down Kruger, but the Titans came away with a win at 3 minutes, 30.82 seconds. Killdeer was two-tenths of a second behind at 3:31.02.

“I felt that I was going to catch him, but I couldn’t pull it off,” Dobitz said with a smile. “Catching up to him was really hard too.”

The Titans posted 170 points to win the team title, while Killdeer supplied 158 points and Beulah rounded out the top three teams with 80.

Trinity finished with six wins, which included three relays — the 400, 800 and 1,600. Kruger ended with two individual wins in the pole vault and high jump. Coltyn Nelson supplied the team’s first win during the 300 hurdles (41.70).

The Titans scored at least one point in 18 of the 19 events. They also had multiple placers in 10 events.

“It means that much more when you can look at every one of your teammates and know that everybody’s contribution was essential,” Trinity co-head coach Andrew DesRosier said. “That really brings you together as a team and it makes something like a championship that much more special.”

Kruger was pleased with his final heights in the pole vault and high jump. He finished at a height of 12 feet, 6 inches during the pole vault and 6 feet in the high jump.

“In the high jump, it was a really good to get 6-foot, because that’s my PR, I’m so glad I got that,” Kruger said. “Pole vault, I wanted to get to 13 feet, but the pole I was on just mushed. If I was on a bigger pole, I probably could have got it.”

Dobitz also finished with a three wins in the 100 meters (11.06 seconds), 200 (22.55) and 400. His time of 50.15 seconds in the 400 dash is the fastest in Class B.

Killdeer’s Tucker Beck was named senior athlete of the year and had four top-five finishes in the 100, 200, 1,600 relay and long jump. He placed runner-up in the 200 (22.71), long jump (21-8 1/2) and 1,600 relay. Killdeer’s co-head coach Nathan Horgeshimer was named boys head coach of the year.

“Everyone performed very well,” Dobitz said.

The other multiple winners for the boys side were Beach junior Hunter Weinreis, who celebrated his birthday on Saturday by winning the 1,600 (4:36.92) and 3,200 meters (10:17.27).

On the girls side, Mott-Regent senior Abby Honeyman, who won senior athlete of the year and is signed to compete for Dickinson State next season, won three events — the 100 hurdles (15.59) and 300 hurdles (47.58) and triple jump (35-2).

Honeyman holds the fastest 100 hurdles time in Class B at 15.12 seconds. She is qualified in six individual events — 100, 200, 100 and 300 hurdles, long and triple jump.

“I feel (confident) going into the state meet,” she said with a smile. “I hit it hard this week and I’m just going to see what this happens. It will be the first time that I’ll do four individual events.”

She said the best part of the meet was she didn’t have to compete against the weather. It was partly cloudy with a light breeze.

“There was no wind and the sun was shining,” Honeyman said. “The past three regional meets I’ve been at, it was raining. It was a nice finish. That’s for sure.”

Trinity senior Katelyn Grinsteinner won two individual events — 400 (1:00.56) and 800 (2:27.76) — and ran the final leg for the winning 1,600 relay team.

Grinsteinner also complimented the ideal running conditions for a positive meet. The Titans won two individual events and two relays en route to a team title with 120 points. Bowman County placed runner-up with 108 points, while Hettinger-Scranton came in third with 98.5.

“It was just the perfect day,” Grinsteinner said. “We came out and gave everything we had.”

Hettinger-Scranton senior Cassie Holt won the long jump (17-6) and helped win the 800 relay (1:49.52). The Night Hawks’ Kelly Pierce was named girls head coach of the year. Mott-Regent senior Alyssa Olin won the javelin with a throw of 132-6, which is the second-best in Class B.

The track and field competitors have a week of practice before traveling to the Class B state track and field meet beginning Friday at the Bismarck Community Bowl.

“It’s a very fun week of practice, because you can be very specific,” DesRosier said. “You only work on the events you’re qualified in. You can be a lot more focused.”
