DSU finishes off sweep against Saints

ABERDEEN, S.D. — The Dickinson State baseball team completed the sweep against Presentation College with a pair of wins — 12-7, 8-6 — on Saturday.

The Blue Hawks have won four straight, their longest win streak of the season.

In the first game, Eric Contreras pitched a complete game with eight hits, six earned runs and 10 strikeouts. At the plate, he went 3 for 3 with two doubles and a RBI.

DSU broke away from the Saints in the fourth and fifth inning after it plated eight combined runs. Left fielder Chris Mjelstad went 2 for 3 with two runs and a RBI, while Eric Seiler scored a game-high three runs and had a RBI.

Presentation responded with a five-run sixth inning in an attempt to close the gap, but it was too little too late. The Saints scored five-straight runs starting off with a RBI single by Chad Ellingson. Tony Hofman went 3 for 4 with a RBI double and collected three total.

In the second game, Presentation kept up with DSU. The Blue Hawks scored five runs in the top of the second and the Saints answered with four runs and tied it in the bottom of the third. DSU secured its win with a three-run fourth inning which was highlighted by a RBI double from Contreras.

In the designated hitter position, Contreras finished 2 for 4 with three RBI and a run. Tim Catalano picked up the win for the Blue Hawks and gave up six runs on 11 hits in 6 1/3 innings.

Ryan Wolf was credited with the loss for the Saints after he allowed six earned runs on five hits in three innings.

The Blue Hawks return home and host the University of Jamestown in a doubleheader to start at 2 p.m. Wednesday.
