DSU men win, women fall a point short

MADISON, S.D. -- While the Dickinson State men's track and field team ran away with its sixth consecutive Dakota Athletic Conference championship, its women's team fell one point short of winning its first conference crown.

The Blue Hawk men scored a conference meet record 350 points while Black Hills State beat DSU in the deciding women's 1,600-meter relay to swing the tight race to their favor. The Yellow Jacket women had 232 points while the Blue Hawks scored 231.

"It was a heartbreaker for us. I feel so bad for the ladies in our program who have just worked their tails off to get to this point," DSU coach Pete Stanton said. "I don't know how much more we could have done."

The DSU women were paced by a solid performance in the field events. Kelsey Aide won both the pole vault (12 feet, 3 inches) and long jump (17-10 ¾) while helping the 400 relay team to a win in 49.57 seconds. Jennifer Hartmann won the triple jump (35-5½) and Christa Hofland gave DSU 20 points in the throw events.

DSU had a one-point lead with just the 1,600 relay remaining, but BHSU's time of 4:07.73 bested the Blue Hawks' 4:11.03, giving the Yellow Jackets a one-point win.

The DSU women were looking for their first conference title since 1981.

"To come down to the last event, you can't ask any more," Stanton said. "It hurts to come that close to winning the first conference championship in more than 20 years and come one point away."

DSU won 10 events on the men's side. Senior Ramon Miller and junior Allan Ayala each won two open events.

Miller won the 200 (21.27 seconds) and 400 (46.49) while Ayala won the 110 hurdles (15.13) and 400 hurdles (52.75).

John Ingraham beat teammate Jamal Forbes to win the 100. Ingraham had a 10.73 while Forbes ran 10.74. DSU's 400 relay team won with a time of 42.23 seconds, but the heralded 1,600 relay team again struggled in a championship situation, finishing third in a heated race with a time of 3:24.24.

Sheldon King qualified for the NAIA national championships with a 6-9 mark in the high jump. Jermaine Christie won the long jump (22-2¼), Kurt McCormack won the triple jump (47-2) and Jeremy Herr won the javelin (164-7¼).

"We felt going in we were in good shape on the men's side. We were just way deeper and had more top-end points than anybody else," Stanton said. "We took care of business on the men's side. We had solid performances."
