DSU sits in 6th, 7th place in tourney

MISSOULA, Mont. -- The Dickinson State men's and women's golf teams received its first taste of golf competition this spring.

Unfortunately for the Blue Hawks, it came at the Frontier Conference championships.

The DSU women are in sixth place, while the men are in seventh after the opening day of the tournament on Monday at Larchmont Golf Course.

"For the conditions and being our first time out this spring, we played pretty well," DSU head coach Thadd O'Donnell said. "It took not only a physical toughness but a mental toughness playing 36 holes in 30-mile-per-hour wind, rain, snow and short spurts of sunshine."

Lewis and Clark College leads the field in both the men's (593) and women's (646), while Carroll College in second place in the men's (601) and Rocky Mountain College is in second in the women's (660).

On the men's side for the Blue Hawks, Chandler Pender leads with a 155, while Matt Altner shot a 167.

For the DSU women, Caitlin Hurlock used a 179 to the lead the team, while Paige Kamminga scored a 201 and Laura Duppong added a 205.

The Blue Hawks conclude the tournament with a shotgun start at 8 a.m. today.
