DSU struggles at NWCA National Duals
DES MOINES, IOWA — It was a rough weekend for Dickinson State athletics. Both the men’s and women’s basketball teams were swept on the road and the wrestling team failed to qualify at the NWCA National Duals Saturday in Des Moines, Iowa.
The Blue Hawks competed in three duals against three nationally ranked opponents.
In the first dual, No. 3-ranked Missouri Valley (Mo.) College defeated DSU 34-10. Junior Tyler Johnson and sophomore Lane Oversen recorded the only wins in the dual at the 157 and 184 weight classes, respectively.
During the second dual, DSU got a boost of confidence by defeating No. 13 nationally ranked Morningside (Iowa) College 28-18. DSU won five of the last nine bouts and recorded pins at the 157, 165 and 184 weight classes.
The last dual of the day was the one to qualify to place and Campbellsville (Ky.) University defeated DSU 34-6. Johnson recorded the lone pin for the Blue Hawks over Joe Whalen.
The Blue Hawks return home this weekend for a Frontier Conference dual and tournament. DSU hosts the University of Great Falls at 7 p.m. Friday and host the Tyler Plummer Classic starting at 9 a.m. Saturday.
