DSU wrestling places 4 in tourney, Hellinger, Klevis take 3rd
EAU CLAIRE, Wis. — Amid tough NCAA competition, the Dickinson State wrestling team battled its way through the Blugold Open at University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire Saturday.
DSU had four wrestlers place in the top six of their respected weight classes and an additional three wrestlers who were a match away from placing. Seniors Jesse Hellinger and Brian Klevis came in third place at 197 pounds and 285 pounds, while freshman Brice Gorsline (125) and sophomore Meyer Bohn (285) came in sixth place.
At 125, Gorsline received a first round bye and lost in a 4-1 decision to Cody Hanson of Luther College. In the fifth place match, Nick Scheffert from Luther beat Gorsline 10-6.Hellinger wrestled strong throughout the 197 tournament, starting off with a 12-4 major decision over Blane Connor of University of Wisconsin-Parkside. But with 31 seconds left in the semifinals, Hellinger’s University of Wisoncon-Whitewater opponent Justin Birschbach pinned him and was sent to the third place match. Hellinger refocused and won his match in a 4-2 decision.
At 285, Bohn wrestled his way back from a 4-0 loss in the quarterfinals to a sixth place finish as St. Olaf College’s Zach Gibson topped him 6-2 to secure fifth. Klevis did the same, but was victorious and sealed third place with an 8-3 decision over St. Cloud State’s Luke Belich.
Overall, DSU picked up 10 pins which head coach Thadd O’Donnell said was a big accomplishment against the top-tier competition.
DSU will have two weeks off and returns for the North Region February 22 in Mitchell, S.D.
