Jones pitched a scoreless seventh inning and picked up the save as the Midgets defeated the Coyotes 4-3 in a West Region game and senior night on Monday at Southside Municipal Ballpark and Astoria Field. Dickinson completed the sweep with a 9-6 over Williston in the nonconference game.

“We had enough focus, intensity and drive to get the win,” Dickinson head coach Pete Dobitz said. “Our pitchers kept us in the game. A win is a win.”

Dickinson senior Dylan Wallner, who pitched two scoreless innings, said it was pretty remarkable to see a freshman shutdown the opposition.

“That’s a big role for a freshman to come in and close the door to many games, which he has,” said Wallner, who also went 1 for 3 and drove in a run. “That’s pretty impressive for any freshman to do that.”

With the doubleheader sweep, the Midgets extended its win streak to seven games and improve to 17-4 overall, 9-3 in the West Region.

The Midgets used four pitchers to go seven innings. Kendall Jones picked up the win after he pitched three scoreless innings and allowed one hit. Tanner Ihmels was charged with three runs on four hits — which included a Caleb Owens two-run triple to deep right-center field.

“It took us a little bit to get going, but the second or third time through the lineup we started be a little more aggressive, put some guys on and get a couple guys home,” Williston head coach Aaron Finders said.

Dickinson jumped out to a 4-0 lead after scoring three runs in the third inning. Wallner drove in Brett Schweitzer for the opening run. Schweitzer drew two walks and stole two bases.

The Midgets used the third inning to strike for three runs, which began with Dylan Skabo hitting a single to right and the stealing second and third. Michael McChesney, who went 3 for 4 with two extra base hits, supplied a RBI triple to center. McChesney came into score on an error from Williston third baseman George Callan, which allowed Cole Anderson to reach third. Anderson scored on a Joe Mayer RBI groundout.

Williston’s Seth Falcon was tagged with a loss after he allowed four runs (three earned) on six hits over six innings.

“After the first couple of innings, he started to attack and got going,” Finders said. “He pitched a very good game for us.”

In the second game, Tanner Hopfauf, Andrew Heckaman and Cole Anderson combined for five innings, allowed six runs (three earned) on four hits and struck out three. Heckaman was credited with win. Anderson picked up the save.

Mitchell Mehrer went 1 for 2 with a three-RBI triple, which capped a seven-run fourth inning. Alex Bast, Luke Herauf, Heckaman, Anderson and Hopfauf each supplied a RBI.

The Midgets travel to Williston for a West Region game at 4:30 p.m. today. With wins against the Coyotes and Minot on Thursday, Dickinson can lock up the No. 1 seed before hosting the West Region Tournament which begins May 22.

“That’s something I told the boys too is that the game on Thursday means nothing if we don’t do our job (Monday),” Dobitz said. “The game (today) is the same scenario. If we don’t take care of business against Williston, the game will mean nothing either. We can’t overlook Williston, because they showed us that they are quality ball team to give us a run for our money.”
