Oil brings people, people need houses, houses need construction, and that’s where Bierschbach Equipment and Supply comes in.

The Sioux Falls, S.D.,-based construction equipment rental company recently opened its fifth location in Dickinson.

“It just seemed like the next logical choice for a new location,” said Gene Kruger, Dickinson branch manager.

While it rents all types of lightweight equipment — water pumps, compaction equipment, telescopic forklifts — to contractors and do-it-yourselfers, it specializes in concrete construction, and rents and sells everything to lay down a slab, except for the mix.

“Some of the homeowners that may be doing projects themselves will come in and rent the same equipment that the professional contractor would,” Kruger said.

While do-it-yourselfers are able to rent the same equipment the professionals use from Bierschbach, they can also get the support of the staff so their projects get done right, Kruger said.

“We’ve got a knowledgeable staff that can help them out with their projects so we can help guide them,” Kruger said. “They can get the job done right.”

While they specialize mostly in renting equipment for infrastructure creation, the company does a lot of renting to people building commercial structures, Kruger said. One of the biggest projects they’ve rented equipment for is Menards.

“It gave us a big shot in the arm when we came to town,” Kruger said.

The commercial growth is really what led to the Dickinson location, Kruger said.

In addition to renting and selling equipment and supplies, there is a mechanic on staff to service potential breakdowns, Kruger said.

Kruger has been with Bierschbach for 19 years — 18 as a sales representative in Sioux Falls before he was promoted to head up the Dickinson branch.

The company was founded in 1979. The four other locations are Sioux Falls, Rapid City, S.D., Sioux City, Iowa, and Fargo.

“What’s nice about that is if we don’t have a piece of equipment here in Dickinson, we have four other locations to see if they have the equipment, which we can get shipped up here,” Kruger said.
