BISMARCK (AP) -- A Denver-based company is preparing to drill in northwest North Dakota for potash, a form of salt used for fertilizer.

Dakota Salts LLC has signed agreements with two companies for the exploratory work in Burke County. Dakota Salts is a subsidiary of London-based Sirius Exploration PLC, which also has mining interests in China, Australia and Macedonia.

Sirius says a drilling rig likely will arrive at the site during the first week of November. The work will take about two months.

The state Department of Mineral Resources in August issued the permit for the test well near the town of Lignite. It's the first exploratory drilling permit in more than three decades for potash in North Dakota.
