Fireworks start grass fire south of Gladstone

Fireworks were the source of a 2-acre grass fire 10 miles southwest of Gladstone on Thursday, Gladstone Fire Department Chief Joe Wanner said.

"It could have been (big)," he said. "It just happened to be in an area where it really couldn't go any farther than what it did."

Firefighters responded to the blaze at about 3 p.m. and got it under control within 30 minutes. No one was injured.

The GFD found used fireworks in the ditch, Wanner said. He didn't know who lit them or if they ignited them in the ditch.

The department also responded to two small grass fires Wednesday. Sparks from haying equipment ignited those.

People should be careful when lighting fireworks by avoiding grassy areas, especially when it is hot and dry, he said.

"Out there, there's no reason for anything to be there," he said.
