Fossum, Midgets continue to win
The Dickinson High gymnastics team was happy to be home.
Nonetheless, Dickinson grabbed three of the top five spots in during the Fern Pokorny meet on Saturday at DHS gymnasium.
“They all have the feeling that we are in the middle of the season and they have those aches and pains,” Dickinson head coach Kent Van Ells said. “Early on they felt it, but as the meet progressed they were enjoying the home atmosphere a little more. They performed well all the way through.”
Dickinson sophomore Acacia Fossum, who is the North Dakota three-time defending state all-around champion, didn’t stick her landing on the first attempt on vault. Instead of attempting the same routine, Fossum switched to give herself a better chance of scoring.
Fossum said to land the specific routine she has to be in the right mindset. The mindset is to get mad and then attempt the routine. The only time she stuck her routine this season was in the first meet on Dec. 6, which was worth 9.650.
“In practice all week, I’ve been consistently standing them up a little bit,” Fossum said. “All I have to do is make myself really mad, so I just think of something that makes me really mad. If I can do that, then I usually stand it up.”
Despite not landing her more complicated vault, Fossum won the all-around with 37.925 points. The sophomore from Richardton also took first in the balance beam (9.650) and uneven bars (9.350).
Dickinson senior Mikaela Kessel placed runner-up in the all-around (36.925), while taking first in the floor exercise (9.625). She also took placed at least fifth or higher in the other three events.
“We haven’t been at home since the second week of December and we’ve been on the road,” Kessel said. “It just so nice to be at home. You just feel so much more comfortable at home.
“I didn’t have the strongest meet, but overall I’m happy.”
As a team, the Midgets finished with a 146.900, which is their third straight meet scoring 146 points or more. Valley City placed runner-up 137.025, while Fargo came in third (136.625) and Fargo Davies took fourth (130.500).
Kessel said the team is continually becoming more consistent. Though the Midgets are consistently scoring around 146, Kessel hopes the best scores of the season are to come.
The Midgets continue their season traveling to Minot at 5:30 p.m. Friday.
“We’ve been pretty strong, but we haven’t hit our peak,” she said. “I’m hoping that we are gradually getting more consistent and we are going to peak at WDA and state.”
