BILLINGS, Mont. (AP) -- The FBI and local officials say the ground search for a missing high school teacher has been suspended but law enforcement will continue to pursue leads in the case.

Sherry Arnold has family in the Dickinson area and a number of southwest North Dakota residents know her.

John Heiser of Grassy Butte said he knows Arnold through her sister, Rhonda Whited. Heiser, Arnold and Whited went on a wilderness hike together in the Theodore Roosevelt National Park North Unit.

Arnold comes from a traditional, northern plains ranching family with good work ethic, he said.

Sidney Mayor Bret Smelser said Wednesday's decision follows an "exhaustive" search for 43-year-old Arnold in the eastern Montana town and surrounding areas. Hundreds of residents, police, firefighters and others participated.

The popular high school math teacher was last seen Saturday, when she left her home for a pre-dawn run. Authorities are investigating the possibility she was abducted.

FBI spokeswoman Deborah Bertram said law enforcement personnel will be redirected to other parts of the investigation. She said the agency cannot discuss any evidence in the case.

Anyone with information is asked to call a 406-433-4027.
