Inmate escapes from work release
DICKINSON - Carley Jean Zaun, an inmate at the Dakota Women's Correctional Rehab Center in New England, escaped from custody Friday afternoon and is currently at large.
Zaun, 22, walked away from her work release program while working as a cook at the Dickinson Law Enforcement Center at approximately 1:30 p.m. and was seen crossing Museum Drive.
"At this point there is nothing that gives us a reason for her walking off," DWCRC Operations Director Colby Braun said.
Search crews from the Southwest Multi-County Correction Center, the DWCRC, Stark County Sheriff's Department and Dickinson Police Department were informed at 4:10 p.m. that an individual had seen Zaun around 3 p.m. Friday afternoon at Wal-Mart in north Dickinson.
Zaun is described as a Caucasian female, standing 5-foot-2 and weighing 105 pounds, with hazel eyes and sandy brown hair. She was last seen wearing light blue pants and a white shirt.
Several tattoos may be helpful in identifying the escapee and include two small stars and one larger star on her outside left ankle, Paris and Boston with a sign on her lower back and a lotus flower on her back right shoulder.
Braun said Zaun doesn't have any contacts in the area that law enforcement are aware of, outside of possibly a few ex-inmates who law enforcement officials have been in contact with since the escape.
Incarcerated on June 12, 2007, at the Dakota Women's Correctional Rehab Center for possession of methamphetamines, possession of drug paraphernalia, ingesting a controlled substance and criminal trespass, Zaun is described as a model prisoner with no prior record of misconduct, Braun said.
Due to the minimum security nature of her incarceration, Zaun is not under constant surveillance while working at the center and slipped out while the supervising cook's back was turned.
The kitchen Zaun was working in was checked for missing items which could possibly be used as a weapon and everything was accounted for by officials.
Anyone with information about Zaun's whereabouts is asked to contact the Dakota Women's Correctional Rehab Center at (701) 579-5100 or their local law enforcement agency.
