Jahner, DHS win at home invitational
Though the temperatures -- at times -- spiked to 98 degrees at the Heart River Golf Course, Dickinson senior Rachel Jahner stayed cool and kept a permanent grin on her face.
She didn't have anything to frown about rattling off a 1-under, 35, on the front nine.
Jahner finished the final nine holes 1-over, 37, to shoot even par to win her third medalist honor of the season on Friday.
"That front nine was one of the best I've ever played," Jahner said. "It just carried over to the back, but I had to keep reminding myself to go shot-by-shot. It finished up pretty good."
However, the bigger accomplishment for the entire Dickinson girls golf team was winning their first team title of the season. The Midgets shot a combined 356, while Bismarck Century was runner-up at 359 and Bismarck High rounded out the third spot at 379.
"Winning for the first time is awesome," said Dickinson senior Riana Cooper, who finished in a tie for second with a 78. "I'm glad that we could play well at our home course."
Dickinson wanted to have a good showing at its home meet and Sara Berglund was pleased, especially after a week's worth of practice. The Midgets went an entire week without playing in a tournament.
"They had a little bit more confidence, because they had a good chunk of time to get practice in and get that confidence up," Berglund said.
The Midgets achieved another notable feat this season. For the fifth time in five tournaments, Jahner and Cooper have both placed in the top five.
"Watching her win during the last couple meets and having her on my team is great," Cooper said. "I love it."
Jahner added: "It's really nice. We are both seniors and we've both been playing since we were seventh-graders. Just watching each other get better over the years and have a good senior season like we are is great."
Berglund said it has been a great pleasure to coach Jahner and Cooper since they were seventh-graders. Berglund knows the team relies on Jahner's and Cooper's score in every single meet.
"It's a privilege to coach them and to have them on your team is an honor," Berglund said. "They should up to play every tournament. They know we use their scores every tournament."
With the added confidence of winning their home invitational, the Midgets continue their season traveling to the Bismarck Century Invitational at 9 a.m. today at the Tom O'Leary Golf Course.
"I'm hoping the girls realize we can do this," Berglund said. "We are looking to carry over this confidence and momentum from here on out."
