Don was born on February 10, 1926 in DePue, Illinois, a son of Clarence and Ann (Nevicosi) Ballard. He was raised and educated in Tiskilwa, Illinois. Don met and later married his high school sweetheart, Vallie Strader on December 31, 1944 in Lubbock, Texas while he was enlisted in the United States Air Force during World War II. After his honorable discharge, he farmed near Princeton, Illinois for several years. In 1960, Don and Vallie moved to Beach so Don could go into the John Deere business with his dad, Clarence. They also raised cattle on a farm they owned north of Beach. In 1996, he retired from the John Deere business but continued to live in Beach until 2013 when they moved to Bismarck.

Don's greatest joy was watching his children and grandchildren in everything they did, especially their sports activities. He also enjoyed golfing, playing cards and bowling. Don taught Sunday school for many years in Beach; and while living in Illinois he filled in giving the Sunday service when his pastor was out of town. Don was also a 4-H leader and worked with the cub scouts.

Don was preceded in death by his parents.

Don is survived by his wife, Vallie of Bismarck; three sons, Mike (Tami) Ballard of Dickinson, North Dakota, Mark (Annette) Ballard of Bowman, North Dakota and Gary (Debi) Ballard of Turtle Lake, North Dakota; one daughter, Pat (Paul) Thompson of Beach; thirteen grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews.
