Jamestown rallies to pin Midgets in crucial dual
JAMESTOWN -- A comeback seemed unlikely, but six-pointers can make up ground in a hurry.
Trailing 30-9, Jamestown won five of the final six matches including four pins, the last of which sealed a 37-34 West Region dual victory over Dickinson High on Thursday at the JHS gym.
"You get that adrenaline going, you got to keep it going," said Cullen Goter, who pinned Dickinson backup Justin Lindberg in 27 seconds at 220 to clinch the dual. "You've got to keep that momentum going. ... It's a 1-on-1 out there with that kid, and if you give up, you're done."
A 16-5 major decision from Triston Shipley at 182 put Jamestown in front 31-30 with two matches to go. It was the fourth consecutive win for the Blue Jays, who allowed Dickinson to take six of the first eight.
"It's pretty scary when momentum starts to get going in one direction in any sport," Jamestown coach Greg White said.
Goter, who came back to wrestling after struggling with injuries in previous years, didn't waste much time going after Lindberg, a much lighter wrestler that Dickinson used to fill the spot of Dual Keck, who was sidelined with an illness.
"They bumped a kid -- he's wrestled at 182," Goter said. "I knew I'd have at least 30 pounds on him."
White said he kept his eye on Goter while Jamestown was reeling off wins.
"I was worried about Collin getting too hyped up," White said, telling him to "Settle down and breathe normal."
But Goter converted on his opportunity, a feat that was all too common for Jamestown in the second half of the dual. Jamestown's Brandyn Harr (160) trailed Michael Cherwinski 4-1 in the second period, when he scored a reversal and pinned him. Ethan Gumke (170) had a lead, but was on bottom in the second when he flipped Dickinson senior Jacob Shypkowski for a pin.
Mitch Ova (138) and Zane Braun (152) also scored pins for Jamestown, which split matches 7-7.
"They make their hay at (152, 160 and 170)," Dickinson coach Pete Dobitz said. "We knew there was 18 points they could possibly get there and they did. We didn't weather the storm like we needed to.
"When you wrestle duals, you got to get pins and not get pinned, and we got pinned. That's what cost us."
The pins played a big part in the win and the excitement they brought may have overshadowed the best two matches of the night.
At 126, third-ranked Jaden Horsted scored a takedown and three-point near fall in the first period, holding on to beat Dickinson's Devin Berger --ranked second at 132 -- by 7-2 decision. Horsted's win was the first of the night for Jamestown, which fell behind 18-0.
Dickinson's Austin Hutzenbiler, who is ranked sixth at 113, scored a 4-2 decision over Paxton Mewes, who was ranked in the first two polls, but recently fell out.
"You've got to have a stopper," White said. "I think Jaden Horsted was our stopper."
The Blue Jays improved to 2-3 in the West Region, dropping Dickinson to 5-2. Jamestown meets Mandan next week and also faces Williston, two teams that entered Tuesday winless in the West at 0-4. Jamestown also has a dual remaining against Minot, a team it beat in a dual tournament in Grand Forks.
Dickinson has a remaining dual against Bismarck Century, which along with Bismarck High is unbeaten in the region. Dickinson did beat Turtle Mountain, a team that topped Jamestown early in the season.
Jamestown's win could set up a tiebreaker scenario for the final two spots between the three teams. The Class A state dual tournament is set for Feb. 14-15 at the Fargodome.
"We have to win them all," White said. "If we can win them all, we'll go to state as a dual team."
