The Killdeer football team had question marks entering the season on the offensive and defensive lines.

Those question marks quickly turned into exclamation points as the Cowboys jumped out to an early 22-point lead.

0 Talk about it

Killdeer maintained it the first-half lead to a 44-27 win over Dickinson Trinity on Friday at the Biesiot Activities Center.

With the win, the Cowboys tie up the series 3-3 against the Titans over the last six years.

Killdeer senior fullback John Knopik rushed for a pair of one-yard touchdowns in the first half. Trenton Rohr connected with a 12-yard touchdown throw to sophomore tight end Dillan Jepson.

Trinity scored its lone touchdown in the first half as Jaret Lee caught a pass from Willy Jahner juked into the endzone from 14 yards out.

In the first half Lewis Dobitz led the Cowboys with 60 yards on eight carries, while Rohr had five carries for 33 yards. Dobitz finished with 14 carries for 124 yards. Rohr went 3 for 3 with 65 yards including a 14-yard strike to Jepson for a touchdown and Tuff Kling caught a 51-yard pass in the first half.

As a team, the Cowboys had 101 yards on the ground. Killdeer didn’t slow down in the second half. The Cowboys finished with 242 yards on 40 carries.

The Titans only had 22 yards on the ground, but Jahner went 7 of 10 for 69 yards. Jahner ended with 23 of 33 for 198 yards, two touchdowns and two interceptions, while Joe Mayer was the leading receiver with nine catches for 90 yards. Trinity junior Jaret Lee caught eight passes for 72 yards. Mayer and Jahner connected for a four-yard touchdown in the fourth quarter.

Killdeer tacked on another touchdown in the first drive of the second half. Rohr escaped a tackle from Easton Brost and scored a three-yard touchdown.

Despite fumbling the ball three times in the second half, Killdeer’s defense buckled down after the turnovers. The Cowboys collected their own turnovers after Derek Tabor intercepted Jahner twice -- including an 80-yard touchdown return.

The Cowboys continue their season returning to the BAC to host Heart River at 7 p.m. Friday. Trinity travels to Valley City at 6 p.m. Friday.
