BISMARCK — North Dakota-based engineering firm KLJ is expanding to Florida.

The firm said Wednesday in a statement that it is opening an office in Lake Worth, Fla., that will specialize in hydrogeological services and provide comprehensive water supply, water management and well water-system consulting to the community and surrounding area.

It is the firm’s first office to open outside of the upper Midwest, according to the release. KLJ is headquartered in Bismarck but started in Dickinson in 1938 as Viegel Consulting Engineering. The firm changed its name to Kadrmas, Lee and Jackson in 1984.

It has 23 office locations in North Dakota, South Dakota, Montana, Minnesota and Wyoming.

Mike Waldron, a Lake Worth resident, recently joined KLJ, and will lead the firm’s initiative in Florida from the Lake Worth office. A professional geologist and hydrogeologist, Waldron has more than 24 years experience in water resource and environmental fields. He has served as project manager and technical lead for numerous injection-well programs and water-supply well projects.

“KLJ has evolved into an industry leader by excelling locally,” KLJ CEO Niles Hushka said in a statement. “Our office locations and local knowledge offer our clients a strategic advantage through understanding and knowing the communities in which we live and work and, we plan to provide the same quality service in Florida.”

In 2014, KLJ was recognized as one of the Top 500 Design Firms by Engineering News Record for its 2013 performance and has won both regional and national engineering awards.
