Dickinson Trinity co-head track and field coach Andrew DesRosier yelled, "Stay back." And that's exactly what senior pole vaulter McKenzie Kostelecky did.

As a result, Kostelecky cleared 10 feet, 1½ inches en route to a win and a new school record during the Town Crier Invitational on Saturday at the Biesiot Activities Center.

"To break a school record is a rare thing and those kinds of things don't happen too often," DesRosier said. "She's worked hard for two years and she's really improved in the last two years."

"I think she's relieved to get it in the record in the books. She wants to go higher and we want her to go higher. We are going to set more goals right now. I'm very happy for her to have it in books."

Despite having optimal weather conditions for pole vaulting, Kostelecky admitted she wasn't feeling the best going into the event.

However, those doubts quickly subsided when she took her first couple of run-throughs and especially once she cleared the bar for the new school record.

"It feels really nice," Kostelecky said about the record. "I literally almost started crying when I got it."

Setting the record was a goal Kostelecky had coming into the season. She had a comfortable time clearing multiple heights with ease.

Though she missed her first attempt at 10-1½, she didn't miss on the second attempt. She knows this meet is going to give her added confidence going into the state meet.

"I thought I was getting over the bar really nice and the pole was snapping good," said Kostelecky, who has signed a letter of intent to pole vault at Dickinson State. "I think I can 10-4 before regionals, so I'm pushing for first place. I don't know if I can get it, but I'm sure going to try."

On the boys side, Beach's Hunter Weinreis has already ran state-qualifying times in the 1,600 and 3,200 meters. At this point in the season, Weinreis is hoping to continue to lower his times.

He didn't falter in either event on Saturday. He handily won each race, but he was still hoping to break the 10-minute barrier during the 3,200, just missing with a 10:02.17, and finishing the 1,600 in 4:36.08.

"The weather was very nice," Weinreis said. "It was nice and warm with a little bit of breeze. It was very nice temperature for running."

In fact, the weather was reflected in all events at the BAC. Twenty-seven of the 38 events had at least one state qualifier.

One new state qualifier on the girls side was Mott-Regent's Abby Honeyman in the 100 hurdles. The junior is returning from a hamstring injury, which kept her out during the early stages of the season. She ran a state-qualifying time of 16.48 seconds.

Cassie Holt, a junior from Hettinger-Scranton, has already qualified in the long jump and triple jump. She won the long jump (16-10½) and placed runner-up in the triple jump (34-9½) as she had state-qualifying leaps in each event.

"It's a nice relief to be qualified, but it still pushes me to try to do better each time," Holt said.

On the boys' side, Heart River has qualified its 400 and 800 relays to the state meet. The only relay left for the team of Seth Ewoniuk, Cole Hecker, Tyson Kudrna and Cole Hlebechuk is the 1,600. And during the Town Crier Meet, they came close.

"We just missed the 1,600 relay," Ewoniuk said. "But, I heard that we have the 4-by-100 time, so that is kind of neat.

"We know we have a good team and we know if get good handoffs the sky is the limit. We can accomplish anything that we put our minds to."

The Cougars finished with a time of 3:36.32, which is less than a tenth of a second off the state-qualifying time. However, Ewoniuk said coming so close is going to give the team some motivation going into their next meet.

"It wasn't good news at first being that we missed it by so little," Ewoniuk said. "Now, it's just something to work for and we can just a little bit extra to get that time."

Trinity's Mitchell Meyer ran a state-qualifying time in the 1,600 (4:39.86).

Hazen won the girls team competition with 132 points as Trinity came in runner-up with 103 and Watford City was third with 90.5.

Bowman County edged Hazen for first on the boys side with 87 points. The Bison finished with 73 for runner-up and Stanley rounded out the top three spots with 68.

Dickinson High had two new state qualifiers with senior Austin Mack and Collin Schock in the 800.

Dickinson's co-head coach Dave Michaelson said assistant coach Greg Jung told Schock to stay with Mack and that's exactly what the freshman did. Mack ran a state-qualifying time of 2:00.08, while Schock was runner-up with 2:00.54.

"It's a classic example of an older, good leader leading a young freshman," Michaelson said. "It was kind of exciting to see. Collin is a very talented young man. Austin ran a great time. I'm very happy for both of them."

The Titans now prepare for the Trinity Last Chance Meet at 2 p.m. Tuesday.

"We are going to use it as a building meet," DesRosier said. "We want to maintain our momentum into the regional meet."
