GRAND FORKS -- The earliest spring wheat being combined Wednesday on David Burkland's field southwest of Grand Forks still is pretty late, all things considered.

"It's about a month behind last year," said Mike Morgan, manager of the Thompson Farmer's Elevator, where Burkland's wheat was hauled in the morning. "I dumped our first wheat on July 17 last year."
